Dr Susan O'Mahony graduated with Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery degree from the University of Queensland in 1998. She completed her Residency at the Gold Coast Hospital before travelling to the UK, training in General and Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery for two years.
In 2001 she was appointed to a Wellcome Trust Clinical Research Fellowship and gained a Masters Degree from the University of Cambridge in England, researching the problem of Lymphoedema (Arm Swelling) in Breast Cancer patients as a side effect of their treatment. She has published widely on this and other Breast Cancer related topics (see publications). Her research led to the degree of Doctorate of Medicine (MD), for which she was awarded the Ralph Noble Prize for the best clinical Doctorate, also from the University of Cambridge.
On her return to Queensland Dr O'Mahony completed her preliminary surgical training and entered Advanced Surgical Training in General Surgery before being accepted onto the Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery Training Program of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons. She undertook her Specialist training at the Princess Alexandra, Mater, Royal Brisbane and Greenslopes Hospitals in Brisbane, before being awarded Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery.
In addition to her general Plastic Surgery expertise Dr O'Mahony has a subspecialty interest in Facial Plastic Surgery and Paediatric Plastic Surgery. After her general training she completed the Craniomaxillofacial Fellowship program of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons in Brisbane and New Zealand, gaining particular expertise in the treatment of congenital problems such as Cleft Lip & Palate and Craniofacial abnormalities, Facial Reconstruction following trauma and Cosmetic Facial Plastic Surgery.
Dr O'Mahony's office is located on Wickham Terrace in Brisbane (see location). She operates at the following Private Hospitals:
Dr O'Mahony also has a Public Hospital appointment as a Consultant Plastic & Reconstructive and Craniofacial Surgeon at the Lady Cilento Childrens Hospital, Brisbane.
Having received extensive education in Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery over many years, Dr O'Mahony understands the importance of sharing her expertise. She is a Senior Lecturer in the University of Queensland Medical School, and is actively involved in the teaching of Medical Students, Nurses and Allied Health Professionals, Junior Doctors, trainee Plastic Surgeons and other Medical Colleagues.
Dr O'Mahony also believes in volunteering surgical skills and education to countries with more limited facilities. Working as a Surgeon with the international charity Operation Smile, she has volunteered her time and expertise to treat patients with congenital facial deformities such as cleft lip and palate who would otherwise not have access to surgical treatment of their conditions. In 2009 she travelled to Vietnam and in 2012 travelled to Cambodia with Operation Smile, where she was one of a group of international Plastic Surgeons who performed over 100 surgeries. As well as undertaking these operations she worked with and provided teaching to local Surgeons in treating congenital facial deformities and other reconstructive problems.
Dr O'Mahony understands that consulting a Medical Specialist can sometimes be a daunting prospect so she maintains a welcoming and approachable atmosphere in her practice. She believes it is important for her patients to have sufficient time with her to make an informed decision to undergo surgery and will be happy to consult with her patients as many times as they require before proceeding with surgery.
